Haven't done this in a while but I feel like it's a good way to keep track of what needs to be done and actually get things done. I write to-do lists but if they're in my calendar there's not really much of accountability going on...

Goals for this week

PhD

Read thesis novels for one hour a day, 30 min Findley & 30 min Atwood

Write, write write. Ideally every day but I already missed two days so I'm just going with write. I'm having a bit of trouble getting the words right in this part of the chapter I'm working on but I know that I should just keep on writing and get my ideas on paper. I can always edit it later. I'm meeting my supervisor next week and my goal was to have this part finished my then as well.

Reading

Finish Gated, the last novel for my Debut Author 2013 challenge which needs to be read by the end of this month.

I went crazy the other day and added all the 2014 debuts that seemed interesting to my Goodreads shelves and ended up with way too many to choose from. Somehow I managed to narrow it down to the ten that seem the most fun. These are in no particular order, just as I came across them on my shelf. I'm excited to discover new writers and stories!

Northwest. Schools, churches, and theaters shut down. The entire city is
thrust into survival mode--and into a panic. Headstrong and foolish,
seventeen-year-old Cleo is determined to ride out the pandemic in the
comfort of her own home, rather than in her quarantined boarding school
dorms. But when the Red Cross pleads for volunteers, she can't ignore
the call. As Cleo struggles to navigate the world around her, she is
surprised by how much she finds herself caring about near-strangers.
Strangers like Edmund, a handsome medical student and war vet. Strangers
who could be gone tomorrow. And as the bodies begin to pile up, Cleo
can't help but wonder: when will her own luck run out?
Riveting and
well-researched, A Death-Struck Year is based on the real-life pandemic
considered the most devastating in recorded world history. Readers will
be captured by the suspenseful storytelling and the lingering questions
of: what would I do for a neighbor? At what risk to myself?

I'm super late but I only thought about the ten resolutions now so here we go.

Bookish Resolutions 2014

1. Read 75 books
I managed this last year, I hope I can do it again!

2. Participate in the Debut Author Challenge.
I had a lot of fun with this last year so I'm going to do it again. It's a great way to discover new authors and books.

3. Participate in the Back to Classics Challenge.
I decided to read some more classics this year. I was aiming for 5 but then I found this challenge and it seemed like a fun way to read some more diverse classics than just randomly choosing them so I upped my number to 10.

4. Collect the Literary Merit Badges at I Believe in Story.
Some of these are for books I'll read anyway, others are fun ways to branch out my reading a bit.

5. Write reviews shortly after I finish a book.
I have been getting better at this so let's keep it up.

6. Read and review galleys and books I won.
I don't have a whole lot of these that I have to review but it would be nice to finally read and review the ones I do have.

7. Read the four remaining books from my ten books I resolved to read in 2013
Two of

8. Clear my to-read shelf.
Either by actually reading them or deleting them because I'll never read them anyway.

9. Participate in Bon's Book Club.
I don't think I'll be reading all the books because some aren't really something I'd enjoy but I want to participate in some of the discussions because there are some that I want to read anyway or others that seem interesting.

10. Keep my resolutions.

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)

Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi Harmonic Feedback by Kelly Tara and Vain by Fisher Amelie where my only five star book these year so I'm going with those. I read four more five star books but three were re-reads and one was a cook book so they don't count.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More
But Didn’t?

Allegiant by Veronica Roth, I didn't dislike it and I actually did give it four stars but it I guess I hoped I would have loved it even more because I really like the first two books in the series. Although I have to mention Greed by Fisher Amelie as well, I was less excited for it than I was for Allegiant but because I loved Vain so much, I jumped right on the second one in the series, which unfortunately was super disappointing.

3. Most suprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?

Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) I guess, I had read good and bad things about it and because the bad things were pretty bad, I didn't think I'd like it but I ended up liking it a lot, the whole series actually.

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?

I don't think I necessarily recommended anything a lot but I guess the Razorland trilogy could count.

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?

Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1)

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?

Tara Kelly

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

I'm still reading Feed (Newsflesh #1), or actually still have to go back to it but I did read the prequel novellas of the series and I really enjoyed those. I never really read zombie novels so this was something new for me. Unless you count Razorland but I don't really count that as a zombie series.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?

Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2)

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

None, I think. There's enough new stuff to read! So far, my only planned re-read is Divergent before the movie comes out but I didn't read that in 2013 so that doesn't count.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?

11. Most memorable character in 2013?

Toss up between Danielle from OCD, The Dude, and Me and Mallory from Going Vintage.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?

I'll have to go with Erase Me and The Heart Goes Last, both installments in Margaret Atwood's Positron series. If there's anything by her that I read, nothing else can beat it for me. And I'm not even counting my re-read of The Edible Woman.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?

I guess Going Vintage in the sense that it made me think about all this modern technology we use and mostly take for granted. Can't say it was a huge impact or anything but it's the only book that comes to mind here.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read?

Shatter Me I guess, it had been on my to read list for a while. But also A Streetcar Named Desire, I was an English Lit major after all.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?

Portia De Rossi's foreword in Vegan Cooking for Carnivores, I always love stories about how people became vegan. This is a bit of a cop out but I don't really remember anything else in particular.

16. Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2013?

Shortest: Origins: The Fire (MILA 2.0 #0.5)
Longest: Allegiant (Divergent #3)

17.
Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To
Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss,
etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

I can't really think of anything but Horde (Razorland #3) maybe because of all the stuff happening.

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).

I'm gonna go with Danielle and Daniel from OCD, The Dude, and Me but the group from Harmonic Feedback has to be mentioned as well.

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

I'm going with Here Without You (Between the Lines #4)

20. Best Book You Read In 2013 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?

Can't say I have one.

OCD, The Dude and Me and Mila 2.0 (MILA 2.0 #1)

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?

I don't really know and to not repeat myself as I already mentioned a lot of the same books, I'm going with Requiem (Delirium #3).

25. Book That Was The Most Fun To Read in 2013?

Even though it dealt with some serious stuff, Flat-Out Love (Flat-Out Love #1).

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?

I don't remember... Requiem I think? But I can't say for sure. Horde maybe as well. No wait! I think that for sure Vain made me cry!

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?

OCD, The Dude, and Me is a little gem that only has 534 ratings on Goodreads.
It also had to be easy and quick because I didn't want to be in the kitchen so much so I quickly threw together this soup which was surprisingly delicious. The two kind of beans and pasta make is substantial and adding some fresh veggies makes it even more nutritious.

Ingredients

Onion
Bell pepper
Olive oil
Vegetable stock
Pasta (preferable something smaller that works well in a soup, I used thin gobetti)
Mushrooms (I used canned but fresh would be better)
Can of diced tomatoes
Passata
Can of kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
Can of butter beans (or another white bean) (drained and rinsed)
Salt, pepper and paprika to taste

Start by sauteing the chopped onion and bell pepper in some olive oil. Add the vegetable stock (the amount depends on how much pasta you're using) and add the pasta. Continue by adding the mushrooms, tomatoes and purée, let it all simmer for a while until the pasta gets softer and then add the beans. Let everything simmer for a while until the vegetables and pasta are completely done and add the salt, pepper and paprika to taste. Serve and enjoy!

I added some sriracha for an extra kick and you can also add some garlic with the onion and bell pepper if you like. It's a really simple but tasty soup which can be whipped up in the blink of an eye basically. I improvised with what I had and wanted to keep it light on the spices but you can add more vegetables if you like or some more spices like oregano or basil.
This weeks theme is hobbies. I don't really feel like I have any exciting hobbies so have a picture of my dog which sort of counts like a hobby I guess except this hobby is part of the family.
What I got done

PhD

3 to 6 pomodori a day depending on if it's a work day or I otherwise don't get around to doing 6.

Day doing 6 pomodori were rare, I only managed that yesterday due to immense procrastination on other days. I also didn't work on some days but on others I did 3 pomodori of work and as I did finish the stuff I wanted to finish I'm okay with that. Looking back at periods in which I didn't do any work, I'm doing well.

Finish the reread of The Last of the Crazy People.

Done!

Start taking notes of the novel.

Done! I got to page 100 or something like that.

Finish the tying up of the loose ends.

Done!

Depending on how I get ahead with this, start writing the next part.

Not done because I need to finish taking notes so I can build my analysis around the quotes from the novel. Stuff has been forming in my head while rereading and typing the notes though so that's something.

Consider if I wait for my friend or if I just send my stuff to my supervisor.

The jury is still out on this one. I could just send it to him but I prefer another set of eyes on it. I should decide on this soon though.

Reading

Read so I get ahead on the Autumn Challenge.

I did read some but not as much as I wanted to but that might have to do with my recent Parks and Recreation office more than anything else. Almost finished with the novel I'm reading though which I can put in one of the categories and then I'll get on with the next one.

Goals for this week

PhD

Finish taking notes of The Last of the Crazy People.

Try and find secondary sources for The Last of the Crazy People.

Start writing my analysis of The Last of the Crazy People, and preferable finish it.

Go through the secondary sources for The Edible Woman once more.

Finally email supervisor.

Reading

Continue reading to get on with the challenges as the year is slowly ending.

Read A Streetcar Named Desire so I can better help my student with it.

Cooking

Finally cook that beetroot soup I've been meaning to cook.

Try another new recipe so I can actually finish my 52 new vegan recipes this year.

Blog more than just these weekly goals.

Goals for this week

PhD

3 to 6 pomodori a day depending on if it's a work day or I otherwise don't get around to doing 6.

Finish the reread of The Last of the Crazy People.

Start taking notes of the novel.

Finish the tying up of the loose ends.

Depending on how I get ahead with this, start writing the next part.

Consider if I wait for my friend or if I just send my stuff to my supervisor.

I think that for this month I'm just going to concentrate on my PhD goals considering that it's Academic Writing Month, it seems like more than enough to get done until Monday and I really need to get cracking because I was so tired yesterday, I didn't do anything and on Sunday I busied myself with stupid stuff and skipped that day... Although let me put one more.
I've had some cheese relapses but I got over that now after finding awesome vegan cheese for my sandwiches and the last time I had a slice of pizza with cheese, it felt so fatty that melted cheese (something I used to love) is something I don't want to eat anymore, I don't really like the taste anymore. I also realize that dairy always made me feel so full and blah (not saying I'm lactose intolerant but there's definitely a change in how I feel now after ditching dairy). It's funny how your taste buds can change like that. As a kid I hated Brussels sprouts for example, now I love them and I can't get enough of them. Serve me a bowl of them, simply cooked in water, and I'll happily devour it.

Anyway, I'm drifting off! I have been obsessed by making a pizza with Brussels sprouts, tried it once before but I also added cauliflower because I had that and it had to be used but while that pizza was delicious as well (how could it not be with two of my favorite vegetables?) I had put too many of the vegetables on it so the pizza got soggy. I think I even spread pureed cauliflower on it instead of cheese, which made it hard for the dough to cook through. But maybe that was another pizza experiment. Today, I decided to give it another try and be more careful with the toppings and it turned out delicious. Definitely making this again and again and I'm already looking forward to eating what is left tomorrow. Only thing I forgot was to put garlic on it, which would have made it even better because garlic makes everything better. Next time!

It didn't photograph very well and looks crowded but it was just perfect on the plate.

Ingredients

Pizza dough (I used the ready made kind that you just roll out but you can obviously make your own as well but I'm always too lazy to do that)
Tomato sauce (I had sauce that came with the dough but again, you can make your own)
MushroomsRed onion
Brussels sprouts (cut in halves or more slices depending on their size)
Chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
Vegan cream cheese (Optional but I still had some left of this recipe and it worked really well)
Vegan grated pizza cheese (I get mine from Veganic, a German vegan store but I just found out they have a British branch as well)
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar

Prepare the dough and spread the sauce on it, then spread the cream cheese on top of that and start putting on your toppings. I started with the onion and mushrooms and the proceeded with the Brussels sprouts because I wanted them roast well. Drizzle some olive oil and balsamic vinegar over it and then add the chickpeas and finish with some grated cheese. Bake until it's done and enjoy!

I absolutely loved this because the dough was crispy and the balsamic vinegar adds and red onion a certain sweetness to the Brussels sprouts (awesome combination, I use it often). The olive oil (and the vinegar as well obviously) keeps things just moist enough and adds a bit of fat. I'm not completely sure what the cream cheese did but I'm definitely doing that again, it seemed to give the pizza something extra I really liked.

Finish editing this chapter finally.

Done!

Take the books back to library and check those two things for my bibliography.

Done! Granted I only did it today but that was because my books were due today and I didn't really feel like going last week and ended up having nothing else to do in town.

Read through the next chapter, edit and send it to my friend for a first read.

I got started on this today because I was lazy last week.

Contact my supervisor for an appointment, send him my edited chapter
and maybe include the next one as well. I'm putting this one down
tentatively because I might wait till next week so I can send everything
at once.

Not done yet because I was able to get the book to check those two entries for my bibliography today and I finished the editing last night.

Reading

Reread Insurgent before Allegiant comes out next week.

Done! I literally just finished it and now desperately want to get my hands on Allegiant... I read this series as actual books instead of ebooks (just did the rereads on my Kindle) so I want to continue that tradition and get a physical copy of Allegiant but Amazon doesn't ship until next week. I did check the bookstore tonight after my visit to the library because I was able to buy Insurgent there a couple of days before it actually came out but no luck. I'm in town again on Thursday so hopefully I can get it then and cancel my order on Amazon (unless they can ship it earlier after all). I might have to break tradition and start reading this as an ebook.

Depending on how my rereading goes, get started with one of my books for the Autumn Challenge.

Done! I forgot that rereading Insurgent was part of the challenge.

Blog

Keep to my sort of schedule of posts I want to write.

Done! I managed to get out several posts but I didn't stick to the schedule I thought was good and maybe I won't do that anymore anyway and just feel what and if I feel like posting with a couple of days on set day.

Cooking

Finally bake that pumpkin pie I want to bake for weeks now.

Done! Only today but I decided to not do it earlier because I was supposed to go and meet an old student for coffee and I wanted to bring some cake. Unfortunately she cancelled tonight though because her little boy was running a fever. Oh well, I'm sure the pie will be eating otherwise. I did cook my pumpkin to make the puree yesterday though, that counts for something. This is the recipes I used from The Post Punk Kitchen

Personal

Decide if I am courageous enough to go to the monthly vegan meet up in town next Monday.

This was more of a thing to decide to go but I ended up not going. I didn't really feel like going alone, although that's maybe also the point of it, to meet some new people. Besides I was pretty tired today so I wouldn't really have felt like going anyway. Why I'm still up now is beyond my own comprehension.

I didn't have carrots so I substituted cauliflower because I did have that and I didn't feel like making seitan so I added mushrooms instead because I happened to have those as well. I also added some more tomato because I wanted it to be more tomato-y.

Ingredients

Onion
Kale
Cannellini beans (drained and rinsed)
Potatoes
Cauliflower
Mushrooms
Water
Canned tomatoes
Passata
Tomato paste (optional but I used it to thicken it a bit)
Olive oil
Thyme
Oregano
Majoram
Cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste

You can use as many of these ingredients as you want, depending on how much soup you want to make. I always find these dishes very convenient to make a lot of to freeze or eat the next day. Just make sure the amounts of all the ingredients is balanced out and add the herbs and spices while tasting. If you want to have it more stew like than a soup, make sure that you don't add too much water when you're cooking. I wanted a more soup like consistency so I used quite a lot of water, which did turn out too much in the end because I had to thicken my soup.

Peel and chop the potatoes and clean and chop your cauliflower. Saute the onion in a bit of olive oil and once it's tender, add the potatoes and cauliflower. Add water and let it cook for a while until the potatoes cauliflower are getting tender and then add the kale (I used a bag of pre-chopped kale but you can obviously chop it yourself as well or even use frozen kale). Stir everything and start adding the canned tomatoes and passata. Because my soup remained a bit thin, I added some tomato paste as well to thicken it a bit (didn't do the trick as much as I wanted so I ended up adding some bread crumbs in the end to make it thicker). Lastly add the herbs and spices and stir everything. Let it all simmer until everything is tender and then enjoy!Chiarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03782069891695553474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7930432413676098168.post-70371947428502444082013-10-20T02:25:00.000+02:002013-10-21T00:39:57.520+02:00Book Review: The RuiningTitle: The Ruining
Author: Anna Collomore
Genre: YA Thriller/Mystery
Rating: 4/5

The Cover

I really like this cover, it definitely
drew me to the book when I first saw it. I like colors and the simple
fonts. The girl disappearing into the water is just intriguing enough to
want to read this book.

The Story

Annie Phillips is about to start a new life
on Belvedere Island, leaving her past behind her. She found a job as a
nanny with the perfect Cohen family. Soon after she starts working for
them, she already falls in love with the family and Annie is especially
smitten by the mother, Libbie, who she admires. Everything seems to be
going well and she even falls in love with the boy next door. Soon
though, her perfect life starts to fall apart. Annie is blamed for
things she didn't even do, the job gets more demanding, her bedroom
doesn't close anymore and her relationship with Libby changes to the
worst. On top of everything she starts to get weird hallucinations and
soon Annie is falling apart, not knowing if she's really going crazy or
is something else completely is going on.

My Thoughts

I usually don't read a lot of thrillers or
mystery novels but I came across this one and was drawn in by the cover
and the story seemed interesting enough so I decided to give it a go. I
really liked it, it kept me on the edge of my seat and it felt quite
haunting at times. Some things start to become obvious at a certain
point but I didn't really mind that, I still wanted to finish the story
and see where it went.

Something I think is pretty
intriguing about this novel is that mental illness is addressed, it's an
interesting topic to read about and not many books deal with it and the
way Annie's hallucinations are described is well done, it's an intense
ride and feels scary at some points. Now and then you do feel like she
could stand up for herself a bit more but who knows what one would do
when found in the same kind of situation?

The ending
of the book feels a bit rushed and you feel like some things could have
been wrapped up a bit better but it isn't all too bothersome I think
because the whole ride is a thrilling one. What is really well done is
the fact that you feel like something isn't right right from the
beginning of the novel and most of the time you can't really you put

Ingredients

Pasta
Kale
Bell pepper
Cannellini Beans (drained and rinsed)
Onion
Garlic
Soy cream
Sriracha
Olive oil
Apple vinegar (white white or rice vinegar works as well)
Cane sugar or agave syrup (or your sweetener of choice)
Majoram
Basil
Origano
Rosemary
Cayenne pepper
Pepper
Salt

Cook the pasta and while it's cooking heat some olive oil and saute the garlic, pepper and onion. Add the kale and keep stirring. I used frozen kale because I didn't have any fresh one at hand but both work. Once everything is cooked through, add the beans and the spices and stir well. Then proceed by adding the cream (I used rice cream but next time I'm definitely using soy because the rice cream was too sweet for this dish) and stir everything together. Add a splash of vinegar and pinch of sugar or syrup (not to much of both, it's just to even out the taste a bit, you could also leave out the sugar but I added it because I had made it just a bit too spicy). Because I wanted a bit of an extra kick, I added some Sriracha as well but this is completely optional. Once the pasta is cooked, spoon your sauce over it, serve and enjoy!

Top Ten Books I Was 'Forced' to Read

I ended up looking back at some of my favorite reads at university. At first I intended to divide this into 5 likes and 5 dislikes but I ended up with 10 likes instead. I simply couldn't leave any of these out!

1. The Diviners - Margaret Laurence

This books basically changed my life, my now PhD supervisor assigned it to me for my term paper after I took my first class with him back in 2002 (I think). It was my first class about Post-Colonial Literature and my first venture into Canadian Literature. And I never looked back. Now I'm doing a PhD in Canadian Literature and he's my supervisor, and I couldn't wish for a better one than him. It's funny because I just realized that he probably has no idea how much he and this book geared my way during my studies.

2. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

A course about utopian and dystopian literature and my first read of Atwood. Another life changer, a couple of years later, I fell in love with her writing and I'm now doing my PhD on Margaret Atwood.

3. 1984 - George Orwell

Read this for the same class as The Handmaid's Tale and it's still one of my favorites. It's so scary and haunting and something that never seems to be not relevant.

4. The Great Gatsby - Scott F. Fitzgerald

Read this for an exam and I really liked it, I should reread it sometime.

5. Angle of Repose - Wallace Stegner

I honestly don't remember what I liked about this but I do remember that I liked a lot. Read it for an American Literature class but I don't remember at the moment what exactly was the topic of the class.

6. As For Me And My House - Ross Sinclair

Read this for a American and Canadian Literature comparative class, I absolutely loved the imagery in the book. So haunting. I also want to recommend Ross Sinclair's wonderful short story collection, The Lamp At Noon and Other Stories.

7. Absalom, Absalom! - William Faulkner

This was one was also part of the comparative class and as it was paired with my favorite, The Diviners, it was what I took on as my presentation and term paper topic. Faulkner is definitely not an easy read but it's an intriguing one.

8. Who's Afraid of Virigina Woolf - Edward Albee

This one I read for the same exam, I read The Great Gatsby for, and I really liked it as well but it's too long ago to properly say something about why I liked it.

9. The Heidi Chronicles - Wendy Wasserstein

One of my final oral exams was about American plays and this was one of them, granted I was allowed to compile my own list of plays but there were some I enjoyed more than others, and this one I really liked which is probably no surprise since it's a female coming of age story.

10. My Mortal Enemy - Willa Cather

Read this for a class on Willa Cather and again, it's too long ago to remember why but I did like it.

The Cover

I really like this cover, it's very
different from other YA books out there. It looks cute but not corny and
it really fits the title of the novel. I like the colors, the retro
look of it and even the fonts are nicely done.

The Story

Mallory finds out that her boyfriend Jeremy
is cheating on her, cyber cheating to be more precise, so she decides to
not care about boys anymore but more than that, she decides to go
vintage and not use any modern devices anymore. Having been burned once,
she feels like it's better to say safe and not even use the computer
anymore. On top of not using any modern technology anymore, Mallory
finds a list of goals her grandmother once made in the 60s and she
decides to try and do everything her grandmother put on that list.
Things on that list are: becoming a pep club secretary (except Mallory
has no idea yet what a pep club actually is), organizing a dinner party,
do something dangerous, find a steady and sew her own homecoming dress.
Her sister and her Jeremy's cousin end up helping her, and so does her
grandmother but as she finds out, completing the list is not as easy as
it looks like.

My thoughts

As fun as the cover makes the book out to
be, and it is a fun and easy read, there's more behind the story. It's a
really heartwarming tale of family and friendship and it makes you
wonder if we all really need all this modern technology. Yes, we can all
agree that it makes our lives easier and we all love the internet for
various reasons (and let's face it, I doubt anybody would still want to
live without it) but sometimes electronic devices to get in the way of
actually living or spending time with people. It's fun to see how
Mallory deals with this, going from having a hard time without using her
cell phone or computer but realizing that life can be good without them
as well.

There is of course also a romantic storyline
in the book, it is definitely well done and it develops rather slowly,
which is always a good thing. I enjoyed most of the other characters in
the novel too, especially Mallory's sister Ginny is quite hilarious, and
her grandmother is adorable. Another thing I really liked is every
chapter starts with a list Mallory made and it sort of introduces you to
what will happen in the chapter. There are some small things that
either don't really make sense or are weird additions to the story but I
won't get into those because it would ruin some plot lines for those
that would like to read this book.

All in all, if
you're looking for a fun and fluffy read that has a bit more substance
and originality to offer than a lot of other novels out there I'd
definitely recommend Going Vintage.

The Story

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is on her first space mission, together with Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), who will be retiring soon. They're simply doing their jobs, and having fun at it when they're hit by disaster and their shuttle is destroyed. Ryan and Matt are left floating in space by themselves with no chance of rescue because their link to earth has also been destroyed.

Yay!

George Clooney, I'll watch anything he and that sexy voice is in. Even if he's stuck in space in an astronaut suit.

It's different from what you usually see, I mean it mainly takes place in actual space, not on board of a spacecraft.

It looks amazing, seriously epic.

It pulls you in and doesn't let you go, you keep wondering how this is going to end.

It's quite claustrophobic, now generally that's not a good thing of course, but if I a movie set in space can make you feel like that, it's quite an accomplishment.

Nay...

I'm not quite sure yet about the final scene, yes I like it, I think, but it feels a bit over the top.

The dialogue is a bit corny at times.

I could have done without Ryan's back story.

At points you will actually feel dizzy while watching this movie. Which is probably an indication of how well made it is but I'm not a fan of dizzy.

All in all

Definitely a movie that is best seen on a big screen. We saw it in 3D and Dolby Atmos, both of which really worked for this movie. I'm usually not the biggest 3D fan and I rather want to see a movie than live it but it made this one feel very real and even more claustrophobic. I am wondering now if I have seen more movies in Dolby Atmos but just never knew... Anyway, go and see this if you want an immense and breathtaking experience with a story that keeps you wondering what is coming next. Even if there's not that much of a plot and basically only two actors.
Author: Margaret Atwood
Genre: Feminist dystopia
Rating: 5/5 stars

The Cover

The books has several covers from different
publishers but most of them feature an image of a handmaid. I don't
particular like or dislike this cover and I'm not sure it's something
that attracts readers but it does give you a good idea as to what the
handmaid's look like and I find the fact that they're pictured with a
huge wall next to them quite fitting to what they have to endure in
their lives.

The Story

The novel tells the story of Offred, a
Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. Handmaid's are only used as baby
machines so to speak, they're property of their Commanders and are
required to have sex with them every month in the hopes of getting
pregnant because the Commanders actual wives can't have children.
Offred's commander is called Fred, which is where here name comes from,
which shows how much of property they really and how much value they
have. Offred used to be a normal woman before society changed into this
hell, she had a a job, a husband, a daughter and a name of her own but
then things changed and she was stripped of all her rights and freedom
by the new dictatorship and through flashbacks we get images of Offred's
life before Gilead was founded.

My Thoughts

Even though this book was written in 1985,
it still seems scarily accurate, it's a world that, while it may seem
far-fetched, could become a reality. Especially considering that in many
places women don't have the rights that are taken for granted in other
countries. It's scary to imagine a world like it, maybe even scarier
than other dystopias dealing with dictatorial regimes because what is
going on in Gilead is downright disgusting.

What I
find especially interesting of this story is that it is set at the
beginning of this new society, unlike many other dystopian novels that
are set way into the future when people don't know any other life.
Offred, however, knows how it was before and she knows the freedoms that
she has lost. I think this makes the reading of this novel a completely
different experience because even though you know what a free live is,
reading about it through the character that doesn't have it anymore, is a
different thing.

Being a huge Atwood fan, I'm maybe
biased when I say this but this is a engaging novel that pulls you into
an emotional and grueling story. It's like a scary dream you don't seem
to wake up from. The writing style is maybe something you either love or
hate, it's different and needs some getting used to because it's more
unconventional than conventional but it's something you have to
experience yourself.Chiarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03782069891695553474noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7930432413676098168.post-52587569653500557972013-10-03T03:42:00.001+02:002013-10-03T03:44:32.429+02:00Top Ten Tuesday: Book Turn-Offs

Top 10 Book Turn-Offs

1. Grammar mistakes

It's just annoying and distracting to encounter grammar mistakes while reading.
2. Spelling mistakes
The same reason as above.

3. Repeating the same words over and over again
Reading the same words or expressions all the time makes for a boring reading experience.

4. Weird storylines that don't add up

If a story doesn't make sense, a book has definitely failed. 5. Animal cruelty
Obviously I don't mean books like Eating Animals for example because in that case I know what I'm expecting but I mean just regular fiction with animal cruelty that makes no sense.

6. Insta-love
Characters falling in love immediately and then becoming the kind of couple that has been together for ages are just too unrealistic for my taste. There are cases where the insta-love is done quite well

7. Forced love triangles
I don't mind a love triangle all the time but if it's forced and only around to create some drama, I'm out. Besides it's something that has done too many times.

8. Characters that are too mature for their age
Characters that seem to be way beyond their actual age, or living in a situation that is not realistic; it's all fine as long as there's a valid reason for their situation or their behavior and I guess to a certain extent I can deal with it in dystopian novels because the world is different but if it's a contemporary novel it's just weird.

9. Addressing the reader directly

It can work in certain cases and when well done but most of the time, it just doesn't work the way it's supposed to.
10. Random italics
I don't know why some writers seem to think that italics are needed to make certain things clear, I can roll with it though as long as there is consistency. I have read books where italics just randomly appeared without any sense.

This seemed like fun to participate in so I'm going to give it a try. I might fail horribly, especially because I got some other reading goals to accomplish before the end of the year but I managed to work in 4 debuts and one book from my 2013 resolutions lists so I'm getting ahead with those challenges as well. The books I intend to read are under the categories but I might end up changing some of them if I come across something better.

General Rules

The challenge will run from October 1, 2013, to December 31, 2013.
No books that are started before 12 a.m. on October 1 or finished after
11:59 p.m. on December 31 will count.

New rule: In the past, I haven't allowed rereads because I
said I wanted you to experience new books with my challenges. Now,
however, I've decided up to three books for the challenge can be
rereads. This is to allow you to revisit books from your childhood or
young adulthood that you might get more out of now, or to finish books
you started a long time ago but never completed. Please reread the entire book within the timeframe of the challenge in order to count it; no simply finishing old books or partial rereads!

Each book must be at least 200 pages long. Audiobooks are fine, as long as the print versions meet the page requirements.

A book can only be used for one category. If you want to switch the
category later, that's fine, just be sure to account for that in your
point total.

The highest possible total is 200 points, and the first five people who finish the challenge will win a featured/guest post on Semi-Charmed Kind of Life and be invited to contribute a category for the winter challenge. Good luck!

This week's book chat is all about banned books because it's Banned Books Week. It's absolutely ridiculous that there are still books in this day and age that get banned, I'm against any form of censorship and everybody should be free to read what they like to. It's even more ridiculous if you look at the reasons why certain books are banned from reading. If you have a look at the lists of challenged books over the year, you'll be surprised at all the books that have been banned at one time or another.

I've decided to list a banned book that I have read and a banned book that I want to read from the 2012-2013 list, I'm actually quite shocked as to which books are banned and have been banned in previous years.

I've heard good things about this book and the fact that it appears on the banned books list makes me want to read it even more.
